General
The MassTech Intern Partnership Program provides matching grants to eligible tech companies to partially reimburse intern salaries. After a company recruits an intern the company must apply to the Program through the MassTech website. The Program accepts applications on a rolling basis through July 31, 2024. After MassTech confirms the company’s eligibility, the company will be required to sign an Intern Sponsorship Agreement. At the conclusion of the internship, participating companies can seek reimbursement according to Program guidelines.
MassTech accepted applications from April 1, 2024 through July 31, 2024 for eligible applicants, unless all available stipends are allocated sooner. MassTech expects companies to employ summer interns between May 1, 2024 and September 30, 2024. All reimbursement requests must be submitted by October 31, 2024 according to the Program guidelines.
Eligible companies may apply for up to 2 interns per program period. This year, eligible companies in the priority focus areas of Advanced Manufacturing, Bioindustrial Manufacturing, Cybersecurity, Digital Health, Fintech, Microelectronics, Quantum Technology and Robotics may apply for up to 3 interns per program period.
Companies are responsible for employing and paying the intern(s) directly at rates agreed-upon by the company and intern. Companies must treat their interns as employees of the company and not contractors or subcontractors. In order to be reimbursed by MassTech at the conclusion of the internship, companies must pay interns as W-2 employees with required payroll withholdings, and submit required forms and payroll documentation. The forms and information about the required documentation will be provided with the Intern Sponsorship Agreement. MassTech will not reimburse companies that pay their interns as contractors who will receive 1099 forms.
No, the Program reimbursement is only available to companies that treat their interns as employees of the company and contractors or subcontractors, pay interns as W-2 employees with required payroll withholdings, and submit required forms and payroll documentation including proof of tax withholdings. MassTech will not reimburse companies that pay their interns as contractors who will receive 1099 forms.
MassTech requires participating companies to follow Massachusetts minimum wage law in order to qualify for the reimbursement Program. Massachusetts minimum wage is $15 per hour effective January 1, 2023.
MassTech does not set a maximum hourly wage for Program participants, however MassTech will only reimburse up to 50% of the intern’s hourly wage up to $8 per hour for a total of $3,200/year per individual intern. A company that pays $16 per hour will maximize the 50% matching funds at $8 per hour until the reimbursement limit is reached. If an intern is paid more than $16 per hour, the company will be responsible for 100% of the portion of the intern’s salary that exceeds $16 per hour.
For example:
- An Intern earns $20 per hour. For one hour of work, MassTech will reimburse the company $8, and the company is responsible for the remaining $12. Once the $3,200 reimbursement limit is reached, the company is responsible for 100% of intern’s wages.
- An Intern earns $15 per hour. For one hour of work, MassTech will reimburse the company $7.50, and the company is responsible for the remaining $7.50. Once the $3,200 reimbursement limit is reached, the company is responsible for 100% of intern’s wages.
No, companies participating in the MassTech Intern Partnership are not obligated in any way to make an offer of future employment at the end of the internship experience.
